Keith Sechrest

Photo of Catherine Graffam

Nonbinary,
they/them.

In saturated canvases, stylized ink drawings, and elaborate jewelry, Keith Sechrest defies and redefines both gender and artistic expression. Their imagery exhibits a Rorschach-like magnetism, with the viewer perceiving things that tell us as much about ourselves as about the artist. While their work rarely utilises elements that may be overtly disturbing, there is nevertheless something subtly unsettling about it– because it cannot be easily placed in an established context. Neither their art nor their gender are conventionally classifiable, and Sechrest has long endured the consequences of both transgressions. Experiences of chronic illness and chronic pain also inform their work, with the micro- and macrocosms of anatomy/physiology and mostly deep-sky astronomy illustrating physical/chemical consumption and transformation at widely varying levels of time and energy.
